I Beat DNS

I promised a short update once I got my website problems figured out, and as I am a man true to my word…eventually…here is my brief update. DNS Defeats Domain.com In my last post, I mentioned I use Domain.com as my registrar. In general, I’ve been happy with them as a service. But when I transitioned away from using nameservers, to using it as a DNS manager for my domain things got a little nasty.
Oh. You’re back. It’s been a while, and let me tell you, the last few months were a hoot. Three depositions, one mediation, thousands of emails, and I bought a house. But that’s not why you’re here. You’re here for some technical nonsense. “Lifetime” Hosting When I first started this website, I used a host called iBrave. Sometime last year, I saw a great deal: a lifetime of hosting service for $30, with unlimited bandwidth, and basic features like one-click solutions for platforms like WordPress.
Well, my desktop Linux experiment comes to an end for now, with a caveat. After two weeks of trying to get comfortable with Wayland or dated X11, I’m putting a pause on my efforts to make the desktop switch, but I think it will truly only be a pause for now. The Nvidia situation is just not yet where it needs to be for me to be a happy camper. My options are either (a) use a display system that is no longer supported in my distro of choice, forcing me into another distro or (b) just get used to things like random crashing, window flickering, delayed text, and half solutions like explicit sync.
Today I had a Hal with the Light Bulb moment. The Switch Doesn’t Work I wanted to install a new package into Neovim so I could mess around with Neorg, an org-mode-like plugin. I want to try to get better at organizing myself and actually get working on creating things I want to do. The impetus for Neorg was a desire to start working on scripts for a podcast idea: “Uninteresting Stories to Induce Sleep.
I’m using this blog as a log of troubleshooting steps I’ve done before, so I don’t waste my time the next time I nuke my computer and try again. We’ll see if this is ever really helpful. Today’s bug: audio-popping and lag when audio starts playing after sitting idle for a while. Ah, this is a classic. I know I’ve solved this bug probably a dozen times in my life with Linux.

A short update today. I decided to try Fedora again, in part, due to a desire to get on to Wayland due to a sense of just instability I was experiencing in X11 (which I could not adequately identify) and because I just generally like the set of tools in Fedora more than the tools found in stock Ubuntu. Generally I mean I like dnf more than apt, I like some of the included software more (this isn’t a big deal and not worth a switch, just a minor preference).
You’ve likely heard by now about the impending nonsense coming to those of us still living in Windows land. If you haven’t, let me give you a few of the particular annoyances I’ve got with the 2024 planned changes: AI incorporation into all aspects of the OS. Source Capturing every aspect of your computer, Source despite all the possible concerns associated with that idea. Source Even more advertising throughout the OS.
I’m fairly confident I’ve mentioned that I’m generally incompetent when it comes to the core competencies of a programmer. I am still learning the terminology for concepts I’ve used in the past like language formatting and completion in an IDE, while deploying them in my preferred “IDE” of choice, which is Neovim these days. Perhaps, as I continue this project of learning and writing about learing through this blog, I’ll bother to figure out how to properly use things like nvim-lsp and mason.
In which, I learn how to poke at CSS until I get it to do what I want. A Menu in So Many Words I am continuing my journey into learning about Hugo, and today I wanted to implement both a navigation menu in the side bar and tags on my posts. I began with the menu, thinking this would be easier than tags (Spoiler Alert: I was wrong). Poison, my theme for this website, has a ready made layout for depolying a menu in the sidebar, but I didn’t like the defaults.
Well then….I guess the last post didn’t remain relevant for long. A New Theme I wanted to play around with theming this website, and I decided to go poking around on https://themes.gohugo.io/. I poked around at a few themes and decided to land on a theme called Poison by Luke Orth. A link to the theme github is on the side bar. I chose this theme for a few reaons. First, I really enjoyed the layout.
